Start Dressmaking

Entry Level: You will need to have completed one of our ‘Sewing Machine Basics’ courses or have similar experience with a machine. This means you must be able to thread the machine on your own, wind a bobbin, and go forwards and backwards with straight stitch.
Materials: Most materials included, but please check below for what you need to bring.

Are you keen to start dressmaking but lack the confidence to get going on your own? This introductory class is perfect for you. We will cover: How to measure the body; Understanding fit; Reading a commercial pattern; What fabrics to use; Laying out a pattern; Pinning and cutting. Plus, all students will complete the following practicals: Insert a dress zip; Insert a dart; Create a facing; Add a buttonhole.

On the day of your class please make sure you leave time after your morning class, or before your afternoon class to browse our shop. Class attendees get 10% of purchases* in the shop on the day of their class. *Excludes Gift Vouchers, Sewing Machines & Classes
All our classes are non-refundable and non-transferable. We urge you to carefully check your diary prior to booking to ensure that you can attend. We also need three students enrolled on the class otherwise it is subject to cancellation. By purchasing this class you are agreeing to our full class policy.
Class Materials and Equipment
Most materials for this class are included in the price, but you will need to bring the following:
Machine: You will have your own working sewing machine to bring with you (bring the manual too if you have one). You will also need a zip foot for your machine. We do have a limited number of shop machines that can be borrowed. These need to be booked in advance.
Thread: 1 x 100m spool of Gutermann Sew All or similar thread.
Haberdashery: You may find it useful to bring your own scissors, tape measure, pins and chalk, although we will have these to borrow, and please do bring a notepad and pen.
