Blanca Flightsuit by Closet Core Patterns: Pattern Review
Blanca Flightsuit by Closet Core Patterns: Pattern Review
I have a few things to say about this pattern, and the garment that I made with it…
Firstly, it is a burgundy denim flightsuit... The Blanca from Closet Core Patterns. A year ago I don't think I would have considered wearing such a thing. Like my son said to me when I asked him what he thought of it. 'It's very bold. I like bold clothes but then I worry that everyone will be looking at me'. And a year ago I would have felt the same. But today I feel that I am only 44 and who gives two hoots what other people think. I shall please myself, and have some fun with my clothes.
Secondly this was, in theory, quite technically challenging to sew. The pattern is rated 4 out of 5 for difficulty and I would agree with that. The thing for me that made it most daunting was the sheer number of pieces – it feels like a serious undertaking. I suppose it is good to have general experience of working with a pattern and sewing up a collar and placket, being confident with top stitching, and inserting a zip etc, but the fab instructions from Closet Core do guide you through step by step very well.
The lightweight stretch denim is something we have in a number of colours in the shop and I've not used it before. I really love it. It sews really well, it has good structure but is soft to the touch. The little bit of stretch makes it forgiving to wear. I'm going to make more in this for sure. The belt buckle is a vintage one from my stash.
It's definitely the garment I have been most worried about messing up, and as I had no problems it did feel like a landmark garment. I just cut it out, followed the directions, and sewed it together. And although I was waiting for a disaster, it didn't come. What this flightsuit made me realise was that sewing is definitely something I can now do. I am good at this. At last. And that is worth acknowledging. That does seem crazy to say, as the owner of a fabric shop, but we are all learning all the time aren’t’ we?
Finally, This outfit is ridiculous and I completely love it. When I put it on, I feel like a new person. I am emboldened. I am ready to be handed a challenge in a sealed envelope, and I am braced for the whistle. This is a dangerous feeling, so if you see me in this outfit, watch out, I'll probably be on a mission.
